Mitosis – A Clear and Comprehensive Explanation

Mitosis, also known as mitotic cell division, is one of the most essential biological processes that allows living organisms to grow, repair damaged tissues, and replace old or worn-out cells. During mitosis, a single parent cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells, each containing the same number of chromosomes. This precise duplication helps maintain genetic stability and ensures the body continues to function properly.

Before mitosis begins, the cell passes through a preparatory stage known as interphase, where it grows, replicates its DNA, and gets ready for division. After this preparation, the cell enters the main phases of mitosis, each contributing to the accurate distribution of genetic material.

1. Prophase

In the prophase stage, the chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes. The nuclear envelope begins to break down, and spindle fibers start to form. These structures will guide chromosome movement later in the process.

2. Metaphase

During metaphase, chromosomes line up along the cell’s equatorial plane, forming what is known as the metaphase plate. This alignment is essential because it ensures that each daughter cell receives an identical and complete set of chromosomes.

3. Anaphase

In anaphase, the sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite poles of the cell. This is a critical step that guarantees the equal distribution of genetic information.

4. Telophase

In telophase, new nuclear envelopes form around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes begin to decondense. The cell is almost ready to split into two independent cells.

Cytokinesis

Following the stages of mitosis, cytokinesis occurs. This is the physical division of the cytoplasm, resulting in the formation of two separate daughter cells. Each new cell contains the same genetic material and can now function independently.
