The ABC Murders (Poirot) Summary
The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie is one of the most famous mysteries starring Hercule Poirot. It begins when Poirot receives a strange letter signed by someone called “ABC.” The letter warns him about an upcoming murder in Andover. Soon after, the body of Alice Ascher is found in her small shop. Next to her lies an ABC railway guide, a clue that will repeat itself again and again.
Soon, another letter arrives. This time, the victim is Betty Barnard from Bexhill. The murders seem to follow the alphabet, both in names and places. The pattern terrifies the country and confuses the police. However, Poirot believes there must be a deeper motive behind this strange order of deaths.
Poirot’s Investigation and the Killer’s Game
With the help of his loyal friend Captain Hastings, Poirot begins a careful investigation. Together, they collect clues and interview witnesses. As they work, the killer continues his deadly pattern. A third victim, Carmichael Clarke from Churston, is soon found. Once again, an ABC railway guide is left behind.
Meanwhile, the media and the public grow restless. Everyone wonders who will die next. Poirot feels that the murderer is not simply choosing random victims. There is a hidden reason behind each killing. Therefore, he decides to focus not only on the facts but also on the emotions driving the killer.
A Shocking Revelation
Finally, Poirot uncovers the truth. The alphabetical pattern was only a clever distraction. The real motive was personal and filled with greed. The killer had used the “ABC murders” to hide one specific, planned crime among random ones.
